BackLitter Picking in the Rain
Posted on: 25 Nov 2019Year 8 Philosophy and Ethics students were not deterred by the pouring rain on Friday 22 November when they took part in a litter pick around Great Missenden accompanied by Headteacher Ms Meloni. Throughout the whole week beginning 18 November, four classes of Year 8 students went out on different days to collect litter and put into practice what they had learnt in a scheme of work about environmental issues called ‘Religion and Life’.
The litter picking coincided with a request from Great Missenden Village Association (GMVA) to support the 'Clean-up for Christmas' campaign. Our students were more than willing to help this brilliant cause to make sure the village is looking its best before the Christmas lights and decorations go up. They all enjoyed the litter pick and different classes competed to see which one could collect the most litter. Students also appreciated the interaction with local residents who praised their good and hard work. All those who took part were incredibly shocked by the amount they were able to collect in such a short space of time. The students were really surprised by some of the more obscure objects that were found including; a laptop, mattress, old motorbike helmet, several DIY tools and car parts. We did not remove some of these for health and safety reasons, but have passed the information on via the GMVA to ensure they are removed by the council.
The event was organised by Philosophy and Ethics teacher, Miss Perry who congratulated the students on their efforts. In total our Year 8 students collected approximately 20 large bags full of litter.
Lynne Dowlen, the Secretary of the Great Missenden Village Association emailed the school to say, “Thank you so much for the litter-picking efforts of your students and for your organisation of the volunteers, the Village Association appreciates it greatly. I am pleased that you were able to be out and about in the village because then people could see for themselves the contribution of The Misbourne School towards keeping the village tidy.”
