Year 11 Support
Year 11 is a hugely important time for our students. Therefore throughout the year we aim to provide a wide range of targeted support initiatives to help students reach their potential in their GCSE exams. These include:
Van Der Spoel sessions
Dr Van Der Spoel is a chartered psychologist, teacher and behaviour specialist, who has worked with thousands of students across schools in the UK and Europe to help them maximise their potential. The information and learning techniques imparted in these sessions are used by staff and students throughout Year 11
ACCESS card rewards scheme
Students gain signatures from staff when they complete a range of activities e.g. attending an after-school revision session. When the ACCESS cards are completed they go into a termly draw to win prizes
Guidance on maintaining positive student mental health and wellbeing
Our MHWB Lead provides regular strategies and support to help students cope with the increased demands of Year 11 and exams.
Revision guidance booklets
Curriculum areas provide guidance on what students need to revise for the November trial exams and also the main GCSE exams. These also contain suggested revision activities.
Revision technique guidance
Students are introduced to a different revision technique each week during their Year 11 assemblies. They then have the opportunity to practise these techniques during form time with their form tutors.
Further details and exact dates on the above initiatives are provided to students and parents throughout Year 11. We receive very positive feedback and we recommend students engage with them as much as possible.
Revision Cards
Guidance on a range of revision techniques is provided to help students find the best way of revising that works for them. One of our main recommended strategies is to make use of revision cards which are supported by a range of education research as an effective method of revising. They are also highly recommended by Dr Van Der Spoel from Glia Learning who visits the school in September and January to deliver revision techniques and motivational presentations to our Year 11 students. Teachers promote the creation of these cards in their lessons and they can be an excellent method of summarising key information.
